AMED

Access to the AMED database (covering allied and Complementary Medicine) is available all NHS staff and students. Searching is via the ProQuest or Dialog interfaces and an NHS OpenAthens account is required.

Anatomy.TV

We offer access to the Anatomy.TV 3D atlas of anatomy from Primal Pictures that provides 3D interactive anatomy models with an extensive collection of multimedia material, interactive animations and interactive dissection images. An NHS OpenAthens account is required.

Apps

We don't have a library app, but our website is responsively designed to work on all devices. However, some of our resources do have apps available, and you can find these on our Library Apps page.

Article requests

Need an article we don't have access to? You can order a copy and we'll obtain it for you.

Binding

Both libraries offer a comb-binding service, with a 24 hour turnaround time. Cost is £2.50 for up to 70 pages, or £3.50 for over 70 pages. We can also sell you just the combs and covers if you prefer to do the binding yourself on our machine.

BMJ Best Practice

BMJ Best Practice is a database of evidence summaries, accessible to all NHS staff and students. It also includes clinical calculators, patient information leaflets, and procedural videos.

BMJ Case Reports

BMJ Case Reports is a searchable database of case reports. Staff can also submit their own case reports and our fellowship number is 915046 if you wish to do this.

BNF / BNF for Children

BNF (British National Formulary) and the BNF for Children are available to holders of NHS OpenAthens accounts. There is also access via the SaTH Intranet, with local prescribing information.

Apps for mobile devices are also available.

BNI (British Nursing Index)

Access to the BNI database (covering nursing and midwifery) is available all NHS staff and students. Searching is via the ProQuest interface and an NHS OpenAthens account is required.

Book requests

Need a book we don't have access to? You can order a copy and we'll obtain it for you.

Book reservations

If you need a book that is held in any Health Libraries Midlands (HeLM) library, even if it is on loan, you can reserve it through the HeLM catalogue using your library barcode number (you may need to reset your password if it is the first time you have logged into the catalogue).

BrowZine

We have access to BrowZine, allowing you to browse our journal subscriptions by subject and view contents pages.

Staff can also publish their own case reports via our  BMJ Case Reports fellowship number (915046).

Catalogue

The Health Libraries Midlands (HeLM) catalogue includes all the print and e-books books held in over 45 NHS libraries across the midlands region. As well as searching for books, you can renew your loans and reserve print books from any of the HeLM libraries.

Colouring books

Stressed? We have a range of colouring books for adults and colouring pencils that you can use in the libraries as part of our Well-Being @ Work initiative.

CINAHL Plus with Full-Text

We offer access for all staff and students to the CINAHL Plus with Full-Text database and journal collection covering nursing, midwifery and allied health topics. Searching is via the EBSCO interface.

It can also be searched as part of the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub.

Cochrane Library

The Cochrane Library includes several databases containing high-level evidence such as systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials. It can be searched without a password, and the Cochrane Systematic Reviews are available in full-text.

Computers

Both libraries have PCs available to use in the IT drop-in room, and at Shrewsbury there are additional PCs available throughout the Learning Centre.

Critical appraisal support

We can provide training in the basic of critical appraisal techniques to groups, and we also provide some online training resources.

Databases

We offer access to a wide range of databases for literature searching, and several of these, including CINAHL and Medline, can be searched via the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub. Details of others such as EMBASE, PsycINFO, HMIC and more can be found on the Searching for articles page.

E-books

We have over 11,000 e-book titles available through several providers, and they are available to eligible users with NHS OpenAthens accounts.

Educational board games

We stock a range of educational board games that can be borrowed for use with a team or individually. Library can help facilitate if required. Selected games are available in an online format, to play over a Teams meeting for example.

EMBASE

Access to the EMBASE database (covering drugs and pharmacology, and other aspects of human medicine) is available all NHS staff and students. Searching is via the Ovid interface and an NHS OpenAthens account is required.

EMCare

Access to the EMCare database (covering nursing, midwifery and allied health) is available all NHS staff and students. Searching is via the Ovid interface and an NHS OpenAthens account is required.

ERIC

ERIC covers education literature and resources and includes citations for journal articles, books, research papers, conference papers, technical reports, policy papers, dissertations, theses, and other materials in the field of education.

Evidence searches

We can carry out searches on your behalf to identify journal articles, guidelines, systematic reviews and other material to help meet your requirements.

If your search is for coursework, we’ll ask  you to do the search yourself but we are happy to offer training on how to search.

Evidence Updates

Our KnowledgeShare Evidence Update service is a personalised current awareness service allowing you to receive new evidence on topics  tailored to your requirements. It covers policy documents and a range of summarised evidence, so you won’t be inundated with primary research articles, and emails are sent each fortnight.

Exam collections

Both libraries have separate collections of revision and exam preparation books for undergraduate medical students, and postgraduate medical courses (such as MRCP, MRCS, MRCPCH etc.).

Fines

You'll be happy to know we don't charge fines on overdue books.

Google Scholar full-text links

When searching Google Scholar, you can display links to the full-text of articles available via OpenAthens through the library. Go to Settings > Library Links and search for your organisation.

Grey literature

Group study areas

We know that people need to work in groups sometime, so we have some areas set aside for group work and collaboration. In the IT drop-in room at Shrewsbury we have a collaboration table that groups can use to work on presentations together.

Health awareness event displays

We have regular displays to support national or local health awareness events. Let us know if your team would like to have a display in the library.

Healthy Lives Collections

Both libraries have Healthy Lives collections to support your own well-being and that of your family, including books on mindfulness, pregnancy, parenting, stress management, exercise and more. This is part of our Well-Being @ Work initiative.

HMIC

Access to the HMIC database (Health Management Information Consortium) is available all NHS staff and students. Searching is via the Ovid interface and an NHS OpenAthens account is required.

Hot drinks

We sell tea, coffee and hot chocolate for £1 during staffed opening hours.

IT Training Rooms

Shrewsbury has two IT Training Rooms available to book. An IT Training Room is also available in the Education Centre at Telford, and this can be booked through the IT department.

Jigsaws

We have ongoing jigsaw puzzles in both libraries to help you de-stress, so feel free to pop in and do a bit of jigsaw. This is part of our Well-Being @ Work initiative.

Joining the library

You can register online, or pop into either of our libraries to register with us (please bring some ID with you that shows who you work for or are studying with). There is more information about who can join on the registration page.

Journals

We have access to over 3,500 journal titles, though not all titles will have all issues available. To check whether the one you want is available, visit the 'Journal' tab on OmniSearch.

Knowledge Navigator

The Knowledge Navigator will help you find your way through the different types of information available, and the different means of locating it, from books to randomised controlled trials, case reports, dissertations and much more.

Laminator

At Shrewsbury we have a laminator, and sell laminating pouches for 20p each. You can either do it yourself, or we're happy to do the laminating for you.

Leadership Masterclass reading lists

We've put together a number of reading lists to support the SaTH Leadership Development team's programme of Leadership Masterclasses.

Leadership Zones

Both libraries have well-stocked collections of books to support leadership and management in designated Leadership Zones.

Leisure Collections

We have collections of leisure reading books in both of our libraries, that include a range of novels, biographies and non-fiction titles.

We accept donations of good quality books, so please feel free to pass on to us titles you've enjoyed and want to share with colleagues.

LibKey Nomad

A browser extension available for Edge, Chrome and Firefox, LibKey Nomad indicates if an article is available in full-text through your library. Install the extension and select the organisation you work for. Works on many publisher websites, PubMed, and Wikipedia and adds links to access the full-text or PDF.

We can carry out searches on your behalf to identify journal articles, guidelines, systematic reviews and other material to help meet your requirements.

If your search is for coursework, we’ll ask  you to do the search yourself but we are happy to offer training on how to search.

Lockers

We have lockers at both sites, available for loan for 14 days at a time.

Medline

Access is available to Medline Complete and can searched via the EBSCO, Ovid or ProQuest interfaces.

It can also be searched as part of the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub.

Mood Boosting Books

We have a number of the Mood-Boosting Books selected by the Reading Agency as being uplifting titles, including novels, poetry and non-fiction. These are available as part of our Leisure Collections.

NHS Knowledge and Library Hub

The Knowledge and Library Hub is an easy way to search for journal articles, and makes accessing the full-text easy. It also provides links to many of our other resources. An NHS OpenAthens account is needed to access the Hub.

OmniSearch

OmniSearch is our one-stop search facility for a range of library resources, including books, e-books, articles, evidence resources and journals.

OpenAthens

OpenAthens is a password system for access to a range of information resources purchased nationally and locally. They are free of charge, and all NHS staff and students can have one.

Out of Hours access

Access 24 hours a day, seven days a week is available to eligible users on application.

PEDro Physiotherapy Evidence Database

PEDro contains systematic reviews, critically-appraised randomised controlled trials and clinical practice guidelines in physiotherapy. No password is needed.

PsycINFO

Access to the PsycINFO database (covering psychology, mental health and allied fields) is available all NHS staff and students. Searching is via the ProQuest interface and an NHS OpenAthens account is required.

Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs)

Read by QxMD

Use Read by QxMD to create a personalised alerting service for journal articles, and connect to full-text if your organisation subscribes to the journal. You can link to the journal collections of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust or Keele University. Free registration required, along with an NHS OpenAthens or university login to access full-text articles from your institution.

Renewing your books

We provide automatic renewals, up to 5 times all loans.

If you've reached your maximum number of renewals, you'll need to bring the book to the library desk to have it re-issued again so you can get another five renewals.

If someone else is waiting for the book, or if it has come from another library it may not be possible to renew it.

Returning your books

Books can be returned to whichever of our libraries is most convenient to you, or in the post. You can also return books to any HeLM library.

Keele medical students based with us can return our books to the Keele Health Library, and can return Keele books at Shrewsbury.

If we're closed (and you don't have out of hours access) we have book return boxes outside the Learning Centre at Shrewsbury, and in the Nurses' Common Room in the Education Centre at Telford.

Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures

As well as print copies, we also have online access available to eligible members via NHS OpenAthens. Access is also available to SaTH staff via the SaTH Intranet.

Social Policy and Practice

Access to the Social Policy and Practice database is available all NHS staff and students. It brings together information from six of the UK’s leading collections of social policy and practice resources, covering over 600 journals along with reports and other documents. Searching is by the Ovid interface and an NHS OpenAthens account is required.

Staff Publications Hub

The Staff Publications Hub has details of publications by staff, as well as resources to support research.

Systematic reviews or meta-analyses

Training and assistance

We're happy to provide training in information skills, and this can be at your workplace or in the libraries. We can also provide assistance over the phone or email if you are struggling to access information.

Trip Pro database

Trip is a great resource for locating secondary evidence such as systematic reviews, evidence-based synopses and guidelines, and some primary evidence such as randomised controlled trials and selected journal articles.

The UpToDate clinical decision support tool is available to staff and students, both on and off-site, and via mobile app.

Vocational Qualification books

We already stock a number of books to support vocational qualification, including the Diploma in Health and Social Care, but if we don't have what you need let us know and we'll obtain copies for you.

Volunteer access

Volunteers working with SaTH can register as library members, borrow books, and use the dedicated volunteer PCs.

Whiteboards

At Shrewsbury we have portable whiteboards you can use for revision or group work within the Learning Centre, along with some wall-mounted ones you are welcome to use.

WiFi

Both sites have access to free public WiFi (via 'NHS Wi-Fi'). In addition, both sites have access to NHS WiFi for SaTH devices (these devices should automatically connect to the network).

Workplace delivery of books or articles

Need a book or article, but can't get to the library? We are happy to send books and articles to your workplace, just let us know when you request or reserve items.
